Irumudi On OTT: Too Soon For A Hit Film?

The success of “Irumudi” has created an unusual problem for the film’s theatrical business. The movie has been performing strongly, but its early OTT arrival could take away a portion of the audience that may still have been willing to watch it in theatres.

The film is set to stream on Netflix after completing just 28 days in theatres. For viewers, this is good news as they can soon watch the film comfortably at home. For exhibitors and distributors, however, the short gap has become a matter of concern.

Theatrical business has changed significantly in recent years. Most audiences now decide quickly whether to watch a film in theatres. If a movie is doing well, a longer theatrical window can help it continue its momentum and reach more viewers. But once the same film becomes available online, many people simply choose to wait for the OTT version.

That is why distributors are reportedly pushing for longer OTT windows. They believe successful films should get enough time in theatres before moving to digital platforms.

The bigger issue is that nobody can accurately predict how a film will perform before its release. A movie that looks like an average performer can turn into a major success, while a highly anticipated project can underperform.
