In a historic decision, New York City will recognize Diwali as an official school holiday this year, allowing over 1.1 million students to celebrate the festival of lights. The holiday, effective November 1, follows legislation signed by Governor Kathy Hochul last year.

Dilip Chauhan from the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs noted that this milestone highlights the city’s diversity and fosters unity.

Celebrations are underway, and the iconic Empire State Building was illuminated in orange to commemorate Diwali, showcasing the city’s commitment to inclusive and cultural recognition.
